After waking up, I got dressed and walked out of
my bedroom. In the kitchen, I ate an omelet, mozzarella cheese, and ham. I also
had muffins with a blend of pineapple, mango, and apple juice. My Spanish host
mother reminded me to drink my Cola Cao milk but I ran out of time
I got ready for the day and took by backpack with
me. We were going on a hike –the Way to St. James. We were going to stay overnight at a hostel
so I needed to take a pillow, sleeping bag, my toiletries and a change of
clothes.
When my mother and younger brother were ready, we
headed over to the neighbor’s house. They live next door. We opened the door
and heard the goats that were in the corral. This is something I love about
Galicia. I love their way of life. I love that the families work together to
have a neighborhood farm. One family has goat, another sheep, another chickens,
another corn, and all of them cultivate their own vegetables. It’s a little
cliché; however, I love the idea that the neighborhood feels like a big family.
Anyhow, all the Spaniards and Americans meet up
at CPI Tuiteiro in the morning. At
9:30am we got on the bus and commenced our 3-hour ride. Finally we arrived in the village of O
Cebreiro that has approximately 8 houses and a tiny church. We ate on granite
picnic tables with amazing views of the mountains. We all ate together our sandwiches of jamón
serrano, sausage, cheese, Spanish omelet, chicken, and Brahm even had a
chocolate sandwich.
Después del almuerzo, empezamos
el camino de Santiago de Compostela. Los
españoles y Americanos empezamos el camino juntos. Algunos caminábamos mas
rápidos y otros más despacio. Por eso
nos separamos en grupos. Maestra McNeilly-Anta y una profe de Truiteiro
dirigieron el grupo.
After lunch, we began our hike on the trails of the Way to St. James.
The Spaniards and Americans began the hike together. Some of us walked faster then others. So we ended up separating into smaller
groups. Maestra McNeilly-Anta and one of Truitierio teachers lead the way.
We
followed the kilometer markers with the scallop shell, which is the symbol of
St. James and the yellow arrows. Aislin, Zach and I walked for almost 4 hours.
In total we walked 20 kilometers! We saw pilgrims walking, riding their bikes, little old people and tiny churches made out of stone that were very very old.
When we finally completed our stretch of the
pilgrimage in Tri Castelo the students would cheer each other on. It was an awesome feeling to have completed
the hike! It was we all together and took a group photo in front of a chestnut
tree that is hundreds of years old.
Fuimos a cenas pasta, ensalada, pollo, y
When we
arrived at the hostel the girls divided into 2 bedrooms each with 10 bunk beds
and took turns showering in the bathrooms.
For dinner we ate pasta, salad, chicken, and ice cream for dessert in a
restaurant for pilgrims.
